Colorado Severe Storm Alert

Colorado Severe Storm Warning: Large hail and 60 mph winds are anticipated on the Eastern Plains on Wednesday afternoon

Strong to severe thunderstorms could hit eastern Colorado by Wednesday afternoon, bringing giant hail, destructive winds, and the threat of tornadoes over the plains.

Storms are predicted to form between noon and 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, with activity intensifying into the evening as cells move eastward. The eastern plains, comprising locations along and east of a line from Limon to La Junta and Springfield, are of the most concern. Hail up to 1 inch or greater and wind gusts above 60 mph are potential hazards. While the tornado hazard is low, it is not zero, especially in isolated, heavier storms.

The National Weather Service has issued a moderate to minor risk of severe weather for parts of eastern Colorado, including Lamar, Burlington, and Trinidad. Travelers and people planning outdoor activities should be weather-aware and prepared for quick warnings. Secure outdoor items and have multiple notification options, especially during the late afternoon commute. Storm activity is predicted to decrease by mid-evening, but more advisories may be issued depending on how the storms evolve. Updates will continue on Wednesday at NWS Pueblo and local emergency stations.
