April (snow) showers Parts of NY, NJ may wake up to snow Saturday before rain hits

April Showers? New York and New Jersey May Get Snow on Saturday Before it Rains.

Almost any kind of weather may hit us in the spring. We may see anything, from hot and bright to chilly and windy. Even snow in April! Therefore, it should be no surprise that snow may mix in certain areas of our region this weekend when the Tri-State’s trademark spring “showers” sweep over it.

The city and its near environs will miss out on the snow before you get too enthusiastic (or worried). However, the flakes will drift far north and west when temperatures drop close to freezing on Friday night and into Saturday morning, particularly at higher elevations.

As far south as North Jersey, there may be a dusting of snow, and at higher altitudes in the Hudson Valley, there might be an inch or more. There may occasionally be consistent overnight snowfall rates, but the amount of snow that adheres will be limited by higher daytime temperatures and rainy spells. There won’t be plowable snow in most places. As temperatures continue to rise throughout the second half of the weekend, any snow that does fall will be gone quickly.

There will only be rain throughout the great bulk of the tri-state. Due to the most excellent rainfall rates, Central and South Jersey will see the highest totals. Some of these stronger cells can turn into thunder.

Fortunately, most intense rain falls after midnight and begins to lessen by Saturday morning. There will be sporadic showers throughout the afternoon and early evening, although they will be far less frequent than those that fell overnight.

Because of this, fields at any outdoor athletic events you have to go to will undoubtedly be muddy and wet, but the rain won’t be strong enough to call off a game. Remember that the weather will be cold, and the air will be harsh, windy, and rainy. It won’t be a pleasant day outside, so pack accordingly and make sure you have your rain gear.

On Sunday, the weather will be considerably better. Sunshine can peek through the cloud cover, and temperatures will gradually approach average.

Sunday is the best day to get to Branch Brook Park if you want to see the cherry blossom festival there. Even though you should still wear a jacket, you’ll feel much more at ease outside than on Saturday.

Additionally, the beginning of next week will finally bring the pleasant springtime temperatures typical in April if you’ve been longing for them. Enjoy the “warmth” while it lasts from Monday to Tuesday. We will see highs in the low to mid-60s before colder air comes in the middle of the week.
