Central Missouri weather update: Multi-day storm system brings thunder and rain into the weekend

A multi-day storm system could produce strong to severe thunderstorms and locally heavy rain in Missouri from Wednesday night until Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the most severe storms are likely on Friday, with destructive wind, hail, and frequent lightning. Heavy rainfall is expected Saturday into Saturday night, increasing worries about localized flooding, particularly in low-lying and urban areas. Cities across the state, including Columbia, Rolla, and Cape Girardeau, may encounter lightning, short downpours, and strong gusts. Commuters should be cautious Friday afternoon, as storms may impede travel on I-70 and US-63. Outdoor plans may need to be rescheduled around the region if conditions get unpredictable throughout the weekend.

Residents are advised to check NOAA Weather Radio and local media for updates, secure outside objects, and avoid driving across flooded roads. Power outages may occur as storms worsen. The threat window runs until Sunday night, with more alerts or cautions conceivable as the system evolves.
