Heavy Rain and Flash Flooding Risks Across the Heartland This Weekend and Into Next Week
Large areas of the Southern Plains and Midwest are predicted to see heavy downpours, and the National Weather Service is warning of severe rainfall and flash flooding concerns throughout the Heartland over the weekend and into next week.
Parts of North Texas, eastern Oklahoma, and southwest Missouri are expected to get more than five inches of precipitation. According to the most recent prediction, some significant rainfall totals will occur in Wichita, Springfield, and St. Louis. On Saturday, April 19, the NWS issued a Moderate Risk for extreme rainfall, which could cause severe flash floods, especially near streams and low-lying regions.
The NWS predicts many rounds of intense rain, particularly over the weekend, with flash floods likely to affect places with steep terrain or inadequate drainage. In addition to avoiding driving or walking in floodwaters, the weather service recommends that homeowners be ready by having several means to get weather alerts. The NWS advises quickly evacuating to higher ground if floodwaters rise, since flash floods can develop rapidly and pose a hazard to life.
According to flash flooding safety recommendations, people should not underrate the risk of flooded highways or places. The NWS’s main advice is to “turn around, don’t drown” since the torrential rains may render roads unusable or wash them away.
As this storm system progresses east over the weekend and next week, residents in the impacted regions are urged to be informed and exercise caution.
